Euander relates the origin of the feast they are celebrating, which is in honor of Hercules who freed their ancestors from a terrible monster named Cacus who lived in a cave overlooking Pallanteum. The “Hercules-Cacus Episode” tells the famous story of how an unwitting Hercules leaves his cows to pasture, and the monster Cacus steals them and hides them in his cave. Hercules is furious at the theft and violently murders Cacus, thereby freeing the Etruscans from the horrible monster.
